Welcome to the St. Gerard's Green School Committee Website, where you can learn about how we keep our school clean, and how you can help us achieve our goals.
You can also learn about the environment; what litter can do to damage the earth, the amount of litter we produce and what people put into the recycling bins. We have to date received flags for litter and waste, energy conservation, water conservation, travel and biodiversity. We're currently working on our global citizenship (including revisiting energy) action plan and are encouraging students to consider their natural environment and how it impacts on their daily lives and on the lives of people throughout the planet. |

Global Citizenship Flag...
St. Gerard's has achieved it's 6th greens-schools flag for global citizenship (litter and waste) following on from our flags for litter and waste; energy, water conservation travel, etc...
We intend to maintain these standards and continue to improve upon them.

Update...
St. Gerard's has been awarded its green flags for Biodiversity, Travel, Energy Conservation, Waste management and Water Conservation. We have managed to reduce our energy waste by over 13%. This was down to the effort of all our committee members and the action plan we set in place. Students have been made aware of energy issues, the need to conserve water and the benefits of recycling as an ongoing regular part of the school curriculum. We have been maintaining a constant effort on keeping our waste down in all areas while we also work on encouraging car pooling throughout the school. For biodiversity, we have planted native Irish trees and pollinator friendly shrubs. We have also built an insect hotel and developed a wild garden area.
School Lunches...Do you really need to use all that plastic, foil or clingfilm? These products have a large environmental impact. Could you use a more environmentally friendly type of packaging? There are cheap Irish made paper lunch bags available in most supermarkets. Could you use less packaging in general? We really need to address the excessive use of plastic in Irish society.
Did you know that tap water in Ireland had been scientifically tested and shown to be as good a quality as bottled water? |
